Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean

Overview

Crete is Greece's largest island and one of the most fascinating destinations in the entire Mediterranean. Its dramatic landscape — the White Mountains, the Samaria Gorge, fertile plains and one of the longest coastlines in Greece — is matched by an extraordinary cultural depth: the Minoan civilisation that flourished here 4,000 years ago left behind the Palace of Knossos, one of the most significant archaeological sites in Europe. By yacht, Crete's coastline reveals a succession of hidden beaches, secluded coves and small fishing harbours.

Key Ports & Anchorages

  • Heraklion: The island capital — the Palace of Knossos is a 20-minute drive from the marina; the Archaeological Museum holds the finest Minoan collection in the world.
  • Chania: The most beautiful town in Crete — a Venetian harbour, a Lighthouse, a covered market and a labyrinthine old town of immense charm.
  • Elounda & Spinalonga: The eastern coast's finest spot — Elounda Bay is one of the best anchorages in Greece; the island fortress of Spinalonga, former leper colony, is a haunting and fascinating sight.
  • Paleochora: A quiet town on the southwestern coast, accessible only by yacht or a long drive — superb beaches and complete tranquility.
  • Gavdos Island: The southernmost point of Europe — a tiny island of complete seclusion just south of Crete's southwestern tip.

Best Season

May to October. Crete enjoys one of the longest and most reliable seasons in Greece. The northern coast can be exposed to the Meltemi in summer — the southern coast is more sheltered and has the most dramatic scenery. Spring (April–May) is particularly beautiful, with wildflowers covering the mountains.

Charter Considerations

Greek TEPAI charter permit required. APA 30–35%. Crete can be combined with the Cyclades (Santorini to Heraklion is a straightforward passage) or with the Dodecanese (Rhodes). Long passages between ports are common — a capable crew is essential for a comfortable charter.
