Overview

The Ligurian Riviera — stretching from the French border west of Ventimiglia through Genoa and eastward to the Cinque Terre and the Gulf of La Spezia — is Italy's most celebrated stretch of coastline. Steep mountains covered in terraced olive groves drop directly to the sea; pastel-painted fishing villages cling to the cliffs; and Portofino, perhaps the most chic small harbour in the world, sits at the tip of a wooded promontory of breathtaking beauty.

Key Ports & Anchorages

• Portofino: The byword for Italian Riviera style — a tiny perfectly formed harbour of colourful houses, surrounded by a regional nature reserve. Anchor outside or berth stern-to if you have a booking; restaurants fill up quickly.
• Santa Margherita Ligure: The larger town just around the headland from Portofino — a good base with a full-service marina, elegant Belle Époque hotels and a lovely seafront promenade.
• Cinque Terre: Five celebrated clifftop villages — Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore — connected by spectacular coastal footpaths. Arrive by yacht to see them without the crowds.
• Portovenere: At the eastern end of the gulf — a medieval village at the entrance to the Gulf of La Spezia, with the Church of San Pietro dramatically sited on a rocky promontory above the sea.
• San Fruttuoso: Only accessible by boat or foot — a medieval abbey in a tiny cove of remarkable beauty, with a famous submerged Christ statue just offshore.

Best Season

May to October. The Ligurian Riviera is sheltered by the Alps from northern winds, giving it one of the mildest climates in Italy. Autumn can be stormy — September is often the best month. Portofino becomes very crowded in July–August.

Italian charter regulations apply. The Gulf of Portofino is a protected marine area — anchoring is restricted; use the designated mooring buoys. APA 30–35%. Euro currency. The Ligurian Riviera pairs naturally with the French Riviera for a cross-border itinerary.
