Overview

Sardinia and Corsica together form the most spectacular island pairing in the western Mediterranean. Sardinia's northeastern coast — the Costa Smeralda — is legendary: emerald water of extraordinary clarity, pink granite boulders sculpted into surreal formations, and the La Maddalena archipelago, a protected national park of 62 islands and islets. Corsica, 12 miles to the north, is wilder, greener and more dramatically mountainous — a French island with a fiercely independent soul.

Key Ports & Anchorages

Porto Cervo: The jewel of the Costa Smeralda — an immaculate superyacht marina surrounded by luxury hotels, boutiques and restaurants. Built by the Aga Khan in the 1960s as a private paradise.
La Maddalena & Caprera: The national park archipelago offers the finest anchorages in the western Mediterranean — pink granite coves, impossibly clear water and complete tranquility.
Bonifacio (Corsica): One of the most dramatic harbours in the world — perched atop 60-metre white limestone cliffs at the southern tip of Corsica. Easily reached from La Maddalena.
Cala di Volpe: Perhaps the most beautiful bay in Sardinia — shallow turquoise water, white sand and the famous Hotel Cala di Volpe in the background.
Porto Vecchio (Corsica): A charming old town with an excellent marina, famous beaches at Palombaggia, and the prehistoric Cauria megalith alignments nearby.

Best Season

June to September. The Maestrale (Mistral) can blow strongly from the north — particularly in June and September. July and August are the busiest and most reliable months. La Maddalena's anchorages fill up quickly in peak season; book ahead.

Charter Considerations

The La Maddalena National Park charges daily fees and has strict anchoring regulations — anchor buoys must be used. Night-time regulations apply. Corsica falls under French regulations; Sardinia under Italian. APA 30–35%. Euro throughout. The Strait of Bonifacio has very strong tidal currents — always check conditions.
