Charter Destination — Sicily & Aeolian Islands
Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean
Overview
Sicily is the Mediterranean's largest island — an extraordinary mix of Greek temples, Arab-Norman cathedrals, baroque hill towns and some of the best street food in the world. Offshore, the seven Aeolian Islands form a UNESCO World Heritage archipelago of raw volcanic beauty: Stromboli's permanent eruptions light up the night sky; Lipari is the bustling hub; Panarea attracts the jet set; and Salina offers lush greenery and the finest capers in Italy.
Key Ports & Anchorages
- Palermo: Sicily's chaotic, magnificent capital — the Ballarò market, the Palatine Chapel and Monreale Cathedral are essential visits.
- Taormina / Naxos: Anchor at Giardini Naxos and take the cable car up to Taormina's famous Greek theatre with its view of Mount Etna.
- Cefalù: One of the most beautiful small towns in the Mediterranean — a Norman cathedral, a long sandy beach and a charming fishing harbour.
- Stromboli: The 'lighthouse of the Mediterranean' is in near-constant eruption — anchor off the black sand beach and watch the lava flows after dark.
- Panarea: The smallest and most chic of the Aeolians — white cube houses, turquoise water and a famous club at Cala Junco.
Best Season
May to October. The Aeolians are best visited in June and September — July and August see the most visitors and the strongest Libeccio winds. Sicily's interior reaches extreme temperatures in summer; coastal sailing is always pleasant.
Charter Considerations
The Aeolian Islands sit within a Special Protected Area — anchoring is restricted in several zones. Stromboli has regulated access close to the active crater. Italian charter regulations apply throughout. APA 30–35%. The Strait of Messina can have strong currents — always time the passage.
