Overview

St. Barths (Saint-Barthélemy) is the Caribbean's most exclusive island — a tiny French overseas collectivity of extraordinary sophistication and beauty. Gustavia's perfect little harbour, the beaches of Grand Cul-de-Sac, Gouverneur and Colombier, the Michelin-quality restaurants and the French sensibility applied to a Caribbean setting create an experience that is genuinely unlike anywhere else. Just 25 miles to the northwest, Anguilla — flat, coral, supremely unhurried — has some of the finest beaches in the entire Caribbean. Together they form the most luxurious pairing in the islands.

Key Ports & Anchorages

  • Gustavia (St. Barths): The island's capital — a miniature French Riviera harbour surrounded by red-roofed Swedish-era buildings (Sweden ruled the island for 90 years). Berths are extremely limited in January; anchor at Public or Corossol.
  • Colombier Bay (St. Barths): Accessible only by yacht or a 30-minute hike — a perfect secluded bay at the island's northwestern tip, beloved by David Rockefeller and now a yacht favourite.
  • Grand Cul-de-Sac (St. Barths): A sheltered lagoon-like bay on the island's northeast coast — excellent kitesurfing and some of the best beach restaurants on the island.
  • Sandy Ground (Anguilla): The main harbour and salt pond area — charming rum shacks, excellent local food and a laid-back atmosphere entirely at odds with the gloss of St. Barths.
  • Shoal Bay (Anguilla): Consistently ranked among the world's top ten beaches — 2km of talcum-powder white sand, calm turquoise water and minimal development.

Best Season

November to May. St. Barths New Year is the most exclusive and expensive week in the Caribbean — hundreds of superyachts fill Gustavia and every berth and anchorage. Book 18 months in advance for New Year's week. The island is quieter but genuinely beautiful in the off-season (June–October).

Charter Considerations

St. Barths is a French collectivity — Euro currency and French regulations apply. Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory — Eastern Caribbean dollar but USD accepted. Entry formalities required between islands. APA 25–30%. Fly to St. Barths via St. Martin (SXM) — the approach to Gustaf III Airport is famously dramatic.
