Charter Destination — Tuscany & Elba

Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean

Overview

The Tuscan Archipelago — seven islands strung between the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas — is one of Italy's most underexplored charter destinations. Elba, the largest, is famous as the island of Napoleon's first exile; Giglio is a jewel of clear water and granite coves; Monte Argentario, technically a peninsula, is where the Roman aristocracy has kept their summer homes for generations. Together they offer a deeply Italian, relatively uncrowded alternative to the busier Sardinia or Amalfi coast routes.

Key Ports & Anchorages

  • Portoferraio (Elba): Napoleon's capital — a beautifully sited harbour town with a Medici fortress, the Napoleon museums and excellent Elban wine just inland.
  • Porto Azzurro (Elba): A lovely harbour on Elba's eastern coast — the Spanish fort, a pleasant old town and easy access to the southeastern beaches.
  • Giglio Porto: The sole village on the island of Giglio — colourful houses, crystal-clear water and one of the most photographed harbours in Tuscany.
  • Monte Argentario: The twin towns of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole sit on the flanks of this rugged granite headland — Roman-era fishponds (Orbetello lagoon) visible from the sea.
  • Giannutri: Italy's southernmost point in Tuscany — a tiny uninhabited island with extraordinary clear water and the ruins of a 1st-century Roman villa.

Best Season

May to September. The Tuscan Archipelago can be windy — the Maestrale and Libeccio blow regularly from the west. Elba and Giglio are busiest in July–August; spring and autumn are excellent for quieter exploration. The island of Capraia, to the north, is a beautiful addition if time allows.

Charter Considerations

The Tuscan Archipelago National Park has regulated anchorages — a permit is required in several zones. Elba has strict overnight anchoring rules near the beaches. Italian charter regulations throughout. APA 30–35%. Livorno is the natural base port; alternatively, depart from Porto Santo Stefano.
