Charter Destination — Bahamas
Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean
Overview
The Bahamas — an archipelago of over 700 islands and 2,000 cays stretching 760 miles southeast of Florida — represents Caribbean yachting at its most accessible and spectacular. The water colour ranges from the palest mint to the deepest sapphire; the sand is white and powdery; and the combination of world-class diving, fly-fishing, water sports and extraordinary marine life makes the Bahamas a destination unlike any other. The Exuma Cays in particular — a 120-mile chain of uninhabited islands — are one of the most extraordinary sailing experiences on earth.
Key Areas & Anchorages
- Nassau & Nassau Harbour: The charter hub — full services at Nassau Harbour Club and a fascinating city combining colonial architecture, vibrant Junkanoo culture and easy Miami connections.
- Exuma Cays: The crown jewel of the Bahamas — Highborne Cay, Norman's Cay, Warderick Wells (Exuma Land & Sea Park), Staniel Cay, the Thunderball Grotto and the famous swimming pigs of Big Major Spot.
- Eleuthera & Harbour Island: Pink Sand Beach at Harbour Island is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world; Eleuthera's long coast offers complete seclusion.
- Abacos: The sailing hub of the northern Bahamas — Marsh Harbour, Hopetown with its famous candy-striped lighthouse, and the Sea of Abaco's protected waters.
- Bimini: The closest Bahamian island to Florida — famous as Hemingway's fishing base and as a shark-diving destination.
Best Season
November to May — the 'dry season'. Hurricane season runs June to November; most charters operate outside this period. The winter trade winds blow steadily from the east, providing excellent sailing conditions. Water temperatures reach 28°C in summer; winter averages 24°C.
Charter Considerations
The Bahamas is an independent nation outside the US but with very close ties. A cruising permit is required; we organise this in advance. Bahamas dollar = USD. APA typically 25–30%. Diesel and provisioning are available in Nassau and George Town (Great Exuma); remote areas have no facilities. Fly into Nassau or Fort Lauderdale.
