Charter Destination — British Virgin Islands

Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean

Overview

The British Virgin Islands are, by common consensus, the sailing capital of the Caribbean. Sir Francis Drake Channel — the sheltered waterway running between Tortola and the chain of small islands to the south — provides near-perfect sailing conditions: consistent 15–25 knot trade winds, warm shallow water, stunning anchorages within easy reach of each other and a remarkably developed charter infrastructure. The BVI attracts both first-time Caribbean charterers and those who return year after year.

Key Islands & Anchorages

  • Tortola & Road Harbour: The main island and charter hub — Road Harbour is the base for most BVI charters, with full services at Nanny Cay and Village Cay marinas.
  • Virgin Gorda & The Baths: The most famous sight in the BVI — enormous granite boulders create a series of grottos, pools and passages just above and below the tide line. Extraordinary geology and superb snorkelling.
  • Anegada: The only coral island in the BVI — flat, remote and ringed by a horseshoe reef. The shallow turquoise water is spectacular; the reef diving is world-class. Flamingos, lobster and absolute peace.
  • Jost Van Dyke & The Soggy Dollar Bar: Home of the Painkiller cocktail — White Bay's strip of beachside bars is a BVI institution. Sandy Spit is a perfect deserted beach cay.
  • Norman Island & The Caves: The inspiration for Treasure Island — the sea caves at Privateer Bay offer superb snorkelling; the William T floating bar is a classic sundowner spot.

Best Season

November to June. The trade winds blow most reliably from December to May. July–September is hurricane season; most charter operators pause operations. The BVI recovered well from Hurricane Irma (2017) and is now largely fully operational.

Charter Considerations

The BVI requires a cruising permit. US dollar is the currency. Customs and immigration formalities are required on arrival from the USVI. APA 25–30%. The Moorings, Sunsail and other charter companies have large fleets here — for superyacht charters, we work with a curated selection of premium vessels. Fly via San Juan or St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands).
