Charter Destination — Malta
Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean
Overview
Malta is one of the Mediterranean's most underrated charter destinations — a small archipelago of three inhabited islands (Malta, Gozo and Comino) positioned almost exactly in the centre of the Mediterranean, at the crossroads of Europe and Africa. The islands are saturated with history: prehistoric temples older than Stonehenge, fortified Crusader cities, baroque cathedrals and the Grand Harbour of Valletta — considered by many naval historians to be the finest natural harbour in the world.
Key Ports & Anchorages
- Valletta Grand Harbour: One of the great spectacles in yachting — the fortified walls of Valletta and the Three Cities reflected in the deep blue water of a harbour that has witnessed three millennia of history. The Superyacht Marina sits within the historic dockyard.
- Gozo — Mgarr: The ferry port for Gozo, but also an excellent anchorage — the island is quieter, greener and less touristed than Malta, with the prehistoric Ggantija temples nearby.
- Comino & The Blue Lagoon: The famous turquoise lagoon between Comino and the uninhabited Cominotto — the colour of the water is extraordinary. Best visited early morning before the day-trip boats arrive.
- Marsaxlokk: Malta's main fishing village — a colourful harbour filled with traditional luzzu fishing boats, and the best fish restaurants on the island.
- St. Paul's Bay: The site where the Apostle Paul was shipwrecked in 60 AD — a quiet anchorage on Malta's north coast.
Best Season
April to November, with an exceptionally long and reliable season. Malta has one of the lowest rainfalls in Europe. June to September is ideal; the famous Valletta Pageant and Malta International Arts Festival in July are worth timing a visit around. The Gregale (NE wind) can be strong in winter.
Charter Considerations
Malta is an EU member — EU VAT regulations apply. Malta is an ideal overnight stop on a passage between Italy and Greece or between the western and eastern Mediterranean. APA 25–30%. Euro currency. Valletta is a UNESCO World Heritage City and was European Capital of Culture in 2018.
