Charter Destination — Montenegro & Boka Bay
Luxury yacht charter · Mediterranean
Overview
Montenegro is the Adriatic's best-kept secret — a small country of staggering natural beauty where medieval towns, dramatic fjords and a nascent luxury scene combine to create one of yachting's most rewarding experiences. The Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is often described as the southernmost fjord in Europe: surrounded by mountains plunging directly into deep water, it is unlike anywhere else in the Mediterranean. Beyond Boka Bay, the open Adriatic coast offers further exploration.
Key Ports & Anchorages
- Kotor: The jewel of the bay — a perfectly preserved medieval walled city encircled by ancient fortifications climbing the mountain above. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most striking sights in all of yachting.
- Perast: A tiny Baroque town of palaces and bell towers, with two small islands offshore — Our Lady of the Rocks, built by sailors over centuries, is one of the most atmospheric spots in the Adriatic.
- Herceg Novi: At the mouth of the bay — a pleasant town with a lively Old Town, good restaurants and views across to Croatia.
- Budva: Montenegro's most popular resort town, with a compact medieval old town, excellent beaches and an active nightlife.
- Porto Montenegro, Tivat: The superyacht marina, with full facilities for large yachts, a growing collection of restaurants and the Montenegro Marina Village development.
Best Season
June to September. Montenegro is slightly less crowded than Croatia and offers excellent value. The Bora wind can funnel with great force through the mountain gaps around the bay — conditions inside Boka Bay are usually calm, but open-sea passages should be planned with care.
Charter Considerations
Montenegro is not an EU member — VAT rules differ. A cruising permit is required. APA typically 25–30%. Porto Montenegro offers full superyacht services including fuel, provisioning and crew support. Currency is the Euro despite non-EU status.
